Nutrition Medicine

Many of the conditions that dominate modern medical practice—cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and many forms of cancer—are deeply influenced by lifestyle factors, particularly nutrition. Yet, despite the central role that diet plays in health, physicians historically have received remarkably little training in nutrition and practical lifestyle medicine during their medical education.

Goals

One of the goals of the Idaho Physician Well-Being Action Collaborative is to expand opportunities for physicians to learn about nutrition and lifestyle medicine in ways that are practical, evidence-based, and relevant to everyday clinical care.

Efforts

One effort in this direction is Amy’s Teaching Kitchen, a physician-led hands-on educational initiative that brings physicians and community members together to explore the connection between food, health, and medical practice. Through small-group cooking sessions and discussion, participants learn how whole foods and plant-forward dietary patterns can support long-term health while also gaining practical culinary skills that make these approaches accessible in daily life.

Teaching kitchens are emerging nationally as a powerful model for translating nutrition science into action. Our hope is that this effort will serve as a starting point for a broader vision: expanding teaching kitchen programs throughout Idaho so that physicians, healthcare professionals, and communities have opportunities to engage directly with food as a tool for prevention, healing, and well-being.

Education

Education will be a key part of this work. By bringing nationally recognized leaders in integrative and lifestyle medicine to Idaho, we can foster dialogue, share emerging research, and inspire new approaches to patient care. These efforts reflect a simple but powerful idea: physicians who understand the role of food, lifestyle, and environment in health are better equipped to care for their patients - and for themselves. By expanding education in nutrition and lifestyle medicine, we hope to support a healthier physician workforce and healthier communities across Idaho.
